BRICS began as 'BRIC' (Brazil, Russia, India, China) with its first leaders' summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009; South Africa joined in 2010-11, making it 'BRICS'. A major expansion in 2024 added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia joined in January 2025, taking membership to 11. India formally took over the rotating chairmanship from Brazil on 1 January 2026. The group has no permanent headquarters; its New Development Bank (NDB) is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
Ministerial declarations like the Indore Declaration shape the agenda that feeds into the leaders' summit. By anchoring BRICS agriculture cooperation in food security, climate-resilient farming, digital agriculture and farmers' seed rights, India positions itself as a voice of the Global South on food systems ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.

The meeting was hosted in Indore, the largest city of Madhya Pradesh (capital: Bhopal).
