Appointed UK's first Minister for Artificial Intelligence, a Cabinet-level post

Andy Burnham became UK Prime Minister on 20 July 2026 and, in his first cabinet reshuffle, scrapped DSIT — the department created in 2023 to house science, technology and innovation policy. Most of its functions moved to a newly restructured Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, led by Jonathan Reynolds, while digital transformation and online harms moved to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Narayan, previously the AI and Online Safety junior minister, was elevated to lead AI policy at Cabinet level.

Giving AI policy a seat at the Cabinet table signals how central artificial intelligence has become to UK economic and governance strategy. Narayan's appointment also marks another milestone for Indian-origin representation in British politics, following his 2024 election as the first ethnic-minority MP from Wales.
