India launched a nationwide Campus Biodiversity Register (CBR) initiative for higher education institutions on 21-22 July 2026.
It is implemented by the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), Mysuru, with the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
The year-long exercise will use citizen-science platforms — iNaturalist, eBird and SeasonWatch — to document campus flora and fauna.
It builds on the People's Biodiversity Register model; Kerala already launched a similar CBR drive on 16 June 2026 as Phase II of its own PBR programme.
A People's Biodiversity Register is a locally maintained record of the plants, animals and other life forms found within a defined area, prepared with community participation under India's biodiversity governance framework. The Campus Biodiversity Register applies the same documentation model to a college or university campus rather than a village or town.
Simple Analogy: Like a census, but for every plant, bird, insect and animal found on a campus rather than for people.
