Ramsar Site

A wetland designated as internationally important under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

Simple Analogy: It's like a UNESCO World Heritage tag, but specifically for wetlands — a global recognition that flags the site's ecological importance.

Located along the Thane Creek shoreline between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, near the Bhandup Pumping Station, the sanctuary draws thousands of migratory Greater and Lesser Flamingos as well as herons, egrets, kingfishers and other wetland birds via the Central Asian Flyway. The AI system will use machine learning and pattern recognition for automated species identification, tracking and analytics, funded through the District Planning Committee's special fund.

Pairing AI-based monitoring with eco-tourism infrastructure aims to strengthen scientific conservation of a globally important wetland while keeping physical footprint minimal (just 0.35 of 20.09 hectares), offering a template for tech-enabled, low-impact wildlife tourism at other Indian sanctuaries.
