Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma launched 'Mission Golden Spice' in New Delhi on 21 July 2026, a Rs 175.45-crore project for Lakadong turmeric.
The five-year (2025-2030) mission aims to expand cultivation from 2,500 to 7,000 hectares and raise farm-gate prices from Rs 30-40/kg to about Rs 80/kg.
Lakadong turmeric has 7-12% curcumin content, far above the global average of 2-4%, and carries a GI tag since 2024.
The mission targets over 17,500 farmers (99% women) and export markets in the US, EU, Japan and the Gulf.
