The Office of the Economic Adviser (OEA), DPIIT, released the revised Index of Core Industries (ICI) with 2022-23 as the new base year (replacing 2011-12), adding iron ore as the ninth core industry.
Core sector growth for June 2026 came in at 5%, the highest in five months, driven by a 43.9% surge in iron ore output.
Electricity now carries the highest weight (30.93%) in the revised index, overtaking refinery products; iron ore has been assigned a 4.9% weight, following the Praveen Mahto Committee (2025) recommendations.
Petroleum-linked sectors — crude oil, natural gas, refinery products and fertilisers — continued their prolonged declines even as the overall index accelerated.
