The Udmaroo Bridge over the Shayok River was inaugurated in Nubra district, Ladakh, on 21 July 2026 by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
Built at a cost of Rs 27.18 crore under the UT Administration's Special Development Package, it is a three-span Truss System Bridge with 70R loading capacity.
It shortens travel between Udmaroo-Hundri and Terchey-Skuru villages by about 35 km and benefits nearly 1,000 residents.
The bridge also improves access to the Sham Gombo (Yarma Gonbo) Buddhist pilgrimage site.
A truss bridge uses a rigid framework of connected elements arranged in triangular units to distribute load efficiently across the span, allowing a lighter structure to carry heavy loads — such as the Udmaroo Bridge's 70R rating for heavy vehicles.
Simple Analogy: Like the triangular bracing in a bicycle frame — triangles hold their shape under load far better than squares, so a lattice of triangles lets a bridge carry more weight with less material.
