HCLTech will set up its first AI-optimised data centre and a global technology centre in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The project, with the Odisha government and startup Sarvam AI, has a total investment of about Rs 15,000 crore.
The capital outlay is Rs 14,257 crore, including assistance from the Odisha government.
It will come up at the planned Odisha Sovereign AI Park and is expected to be operational by 2028.
The global technology centre will house about 5,000 people and support India's sovereign-AI goals.
Sovereign AI means a country having its own AI computing infrastructure, data storage and AI models, rather than depending on foreign providers. The aim is that sensitive data is processed within the country, that AI models understand local languages and contexts, and that the state and domestic firms are not reliant on infrastructure they do not control. A dedicated AI data centre with high-performance computing, paired with home-grown foundation models, is the physical backbone of such a capability.
Simple Analogy: It is like a country growing and storing its own food rather than importing every meal, applied to computing power and AI.
