Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid nationwide student protests over the NEET-UG examination row.
President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation on the Prime Minister's advice under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Pralhad Joshi has been given additional charge of the Ministry of Education.
Joshi continues to hold Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.
The change was effective immediately.
Under Article 75 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister is appointed by the President and other ministers are appointed on the PM's advice; ministers hold office 'during the pleasure of the President'. In practice a minister resigns by submitting the resignation to the President, who acts on the Prime Minister's advice, as reflected in Article 75(2). 'Additional charge' means an existing minister temporarily takes on a second ministry's work alongside their own, until a regular appointment is made.
Simple Analogy: Additional charge is like a manager covering a colleague's desk as well as their own until a replacement is hired.
