The decision was taken at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
Sarnath becomes India's 45th World Heritage Site, ranking India 6th globally.
After attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, Gautama Buddha travelled to Sarnath (Rishipatana/Mrigadava) in the 6th century BCE to deliver his first sermon to his five former companions. This event set the "Wheel of Dharma" in motion and marked the foundation of the Buddhist monastic community (Sangha).
