The Supreme Court began live-streaming proceedings of Constitution Bench and other important hearings to make justice more transparent and accessible, and such streams have drawn very large audiences. But the same openness allowed clips to be extracted, edited with sensational titles, and in some cases manipulated using artificial intelligence, distorting what judges actually said. The petition, filed as a public interest litigation, argued that the right to fair reporting under Article 19(1)(a) does not extend to misrepresentation or sensationalism. The court warned that if misuse continues it may reconsider live-streaming altogether, cautioning that proceedings must not become a '24/7 entertainment network'.
