Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, from Manipur, is among India's most celebrated weightlifters. She won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a world championship gold in 2017, and has been honoured with the Padma Shri and the country's highest sporting award. Her Glasgow performance was notable not only for the third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold but for the manner of it: her 190 kg total, made up of an 85 kg snatch and a 105 kg clean and jerk, set new Games records. Her compatriot Rishikanta Singh added India's first silver of the Games in weightlifting on the same day.
