Government data released on 16 August 2026 put the death toll of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ebola outbreak at 2,325, making it the deadliest in the country's history.
The toll passed the 2,299 deaths of the 2018-2020 outbreak, until now the DRC's worst on record.
Confirmed cases had risen to 4,945, and the outbreak has spread to 54 health zones across six provinces.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, against which no vaccine or specific treatment is approved.
Ituri province remains the epicentre; two deaths have also been recorded in neighbouring Uganda.
Ebola is not one virus but a group of related species, and the countermeasures built over the last decade were built against one of them. Bundibugyo virus was first identified in 2007 in the Bundibugyo district of western Uganda, from which it takes its name, and had appeared only twice before - in Uganda in 2007-08 and at Isiro in the DRC in 2012. The two licensed Ebola vaccines, Ervebo (rVSV-ZEBOV) and the two-dose Zabdeno-Mvabea regimen, both target Zaire ebolavirus; whether they cross-protect against Bundibugyo has not been established clinically. On 7 August 2026 the WHO's vaccine advisory group recommended testing Ervebo against Bundibugyo in a Phase 3 trial. Until such a trial reports, response teams are left with the pre-vaccine toolkit: case isolation, contact tracing, safe burials and infection control.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, called Zaire between 1971 and 1997, sits in Central Africa astride the Equator and is the second-largest country in Africa by area after Algeria. It gained independence from Belgium in 1960 and has only a narrow coastline on the Atlantic. Nine countries border it - the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and the Republic of the Congo. The Congo River, which crosses the Equator twice, drains a basin of over 3.46 million sq km sustaining the world's second-largest tropical rainforest. Its eastern frontier is the Albertine Rift, the western arm of the East African Rift System, holding Lakes Albert, Edward, Kivu and Tanganyika. The snow-capped Ruwenzori Range rises to Margherita Peak at 5,109 m, the country's highest point, beside the active Virunga volcanic chain. The Katanga plateau in the south-east holds the world's largest cobalt reserves along with copper. The outbreak's provinces - Ituri, North and South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele and Tshopo - all lie in this eastern and northern belt, much of it conflict-affected and close to the Ugandan, Rwandan and South Sudanese borders.
