Airbus awarded Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt Ltd a multi-year contract on 31 August 2026 to manufacture and supply fuselage skins for the A320neo and A321XLR.
The agreement covers 11 fuselage skins - eight for Section 18 (rear fuselage) and three for Section 19 (tail section).
The panels will be made at Mahindra's Bengaluru facility and shipped to Airbus Aerostructures' plant at Augsburg, Germany.
First deliveries are scheduled for 2028; Mahindra will add chemical milling, surface treatment and stretch-forming lines for the work.
It extends an Airbus-Mahindra relationship that already covers fuselages for the H125 and H130 helicopters.
The fuselage is the body of an aircraft, and it is built in numbered sections that are joined together. The skin is the outer structural panel of a section - not a cosmetic covering but a load-bearing element that must be formed to very tight dimensional tolerance. Section 18 is the rear fuselage and Section 19 the tail section. Making these panels needs specialised processes: stretch-forming to shape the metal to a curve, chemical milling to remove material selectively so the panel is thin where it can be and thick where load demands, and surface treatment for corrosion protection.
Simple Analogy: A fuselage skin is closer to the load-bearing wall of a building than to its paint - it holds the structure up, and it has to be shaped to the millimetre.
