Engineers' Day marks the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, born on 15 September 1861. He was Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918 and worked on irrigation, flood control and industrial planning. He is associated with the automatic sluice gates at the Krishnaraja Sagara dam on the Kaveri, and received the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam, on the Kaveri near Mysuru, is the best-known engineering work tied to Visvesvaraya in Karnataka.
