National Engineers' Day was observed across India on 15 September 2026, the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (born 15 September 1861, Muddenahalli, Karnataka).
India has marked the day since 1968. Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
He designed automatic sluice gates, first installed at Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune in 1903. He also led the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam project and advised on flood protection after the 1908 Musi floods in Hyderabad.
As Dewan of Mysore (1912-1918) he promoted the Bhadravati iron and steel works, the Mysore Soap Factory and the State Bank of Mysore, earning the title 'Father of Modern Mysore'.
