The PLFS monthly bulletin for August 2026, released on 15 September, put India's Labour Force Participation Rate (15+ years) at 55.6%, up from 55.4% in July.
The Worker Population Ratio rose to 52.8%, its highest since March 2026.
The overall unemployment rate fell to 5.0% from 5.1%; rural unemployment dropped to 4.1%, the lowest since January 2026, while urban unemployment was 6.8%.
The gains came from rural areas - rural LFPR rose to 58.2% while urban LFPR stayed at 50.4%.
The survey is run by the National Statistical Office (MoSPI) using the Current Weekly Status approach; this is the 17th monthly bulletin.
LFPR is the share of the population working or seeking work. WPR is the share actually employed. The unemployment rate is the share of the labour force - not the whole population - seeking work but not finding it.
Simple Analogy: Of those at the job fair, how many left without a job.
