The Prime Minister paid tribute to Bengali novelist Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary, 15 September 2026.
Born on 15 September 1876 at Debanandapur, Hooghly, he wrote Parineeta, Devdas, Srikanta, Charitraheen and Pather Dabi; his works have inspired more than 40 films.
Pather Dabi (1926), about revolutionary resistance to British rule, was banned by the colonial government.
He presided over the Howrah District Congress (1921-1936), took part in the Non-Cooperation Movement and died on 16 January 1938.
