On 18 September 2026, Indian Railways approved two Maharashtra projects worth about ₹990 crore together.
Chouk-Karjat doubling: 10.86 km on Central Railway's Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, at ₹497 crore. It adds five pairs of passenger trains and 18.35 MTPA of freight capacity.
Mukutban-Gadchandur new line: 38.21 km in South Central Railway's Nanded division, at ₹493 crore. It links the coal and cement belt of Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts.
The new line is projected to carry 6.08 MTPA of freight and two MEMU trains each way daily. It will ease the Wardha-Manikgarh section and the Balharshah-Nagpur high-density route.

Chouk and Karjat lie in Raigad district on the edge of the Mumbai region, where the Panvel-Karjat line links JNPA port and Mumbai with the ghat route to Pune. Mukutban (Yavatmal) and Gadchandur (Chandrapur) lie in eastern Vidarbha near the Telangana border. The new line takes cement and coal traffic off the Wardha-Manikgarh section and the Balharshah-Nagpur high-density network.
