Raman Effect
The Raman Effect describes the phenomenon where, when light traverses a transparent material, a small fraction of the scattered light changes its wavelength and amplitude. This occurs due to the inelastic scattering of photons by molecules, meaning there is an exchange of energy between the light photons and the molecular vibrations, rotations, or other excitations. This energy exchange results in the scattered light having a different frequency (and thus wavelength) than the incident light.
Simple Analogy: Imagine throwing a ball at a moving object. Most of the time, the ball bounces back with its original speed (elastic scattering). But sometimes, it might either gain or lose a tiny bit of speed if the object was moving towards or away from it (inelastic scattering). The Raman Effect is similar, where light 'bounces' off molecules and changes its energy slightly.
