The Bogibeel Bridge is a rail-cum-road bridge across the river Brahmaputra in Assam, connecting Dhemaji district on the north bank with Dibrugarh district on the south. It was inaugurated in December 2018 and is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge, carrying a double-line broad gauge railway on its lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck. Beyond its engineering scale, the bridge has strategic importance: it substantially shortens the movement of troops and supplies towards the Arunachal Pradesh sector of the India-China border, and it connects a region where the Brahmaputra had long divided road and rail networks.

The Brahmaputra is not merely wide; it braids, shifts channel and floods, which historically made permanent crossings rare and left the north and south banks of Upper Assam functionally separate transport regions. Before the bridge, travel between the two banks depended on long detours or ferries that failed in high water. Bogibeel closes that gap year-round, cutting journey times sharply for both passengers and freight. The strategic dimension follows from the same geography: the areas north of the river lead towards the Arunachal Pradesh border, and any movement of military equipment previously had to travel far upstream or downstream to cross. A double-decker bridge carrying broad gauge rail as well as road means heavy loads can move directly. It is one of a cluster of North East connectivity projects — including the Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the Lohit — that treat river crossings as strategic rather than merely local infrastructure.
