An emergency landing is an unscheduled landing made because a condition on board or outside the aircraft makes continuing the flight to its planned destination unsafe. Aviation practice distinguishes three types. A forced landing is one the crew has no choice about — typically after total engine failure — and may occur away from any airport. A precautionary landing is a controlled decision to land early before a developing problem becomes critical, such as low fuel, deteriorating weather or a technical warning. Ditching is a forced landing on water. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation regulates flight operations, while the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau investigates accidents and serious incidents.

An aircraft has two different weight limits: a maximum take-off weight and a lower maximum landing weight. The difference exists because landing imposes far greater stress on the structure and landing gear than take-off does, and because a heavier aircraft needs more runway to stop. On a long flight this is not an issue, since fuel burns off en route and the aircraft is naturally lighter by arrival. But an emergency shortly after take-off leaves the aircraft still near its maximum take-off weight, too heavy to land safely. Some aircraft types can jettison fuel in flight to come down to landing weight; those that cannot must either circle to burn fuel — if time allows — or perform an overweight landing, which requires a structural inspection afterwards.
A loaded truck can drive down a bridge it should not brake hard on — the weight is fine while moving, dangerous at the moment of stopping.
The sequence is standardised so that crew, controllers and ground services act in a known order rather than improvising.
The crew identifies the problem and follows the checklist for that specific failure
A distress or urgency call is transmitted — MAYDAY for grave and imminent danger, PAN-PAN for a serious but non-critical situation
The transponder is set to the appropriate code, alerting all controllers on the network at once
Air traffic control gives the aircraft priority, clears the airspace and identifies the nearest suitable airport
Weight is reduced if necessary, by fuel jettison or by holding to burn fuel, to reach maximum landing weight
The cabin crew prepare the passengers — securing the cabin, briefing on the brace position and exit locations
Fire and rescue services are positioned at the runway before touchdown, and evacuation follows if required

The reason air travel is statistically among the safest forms of transport is not that failures do not occur — they do — but that the response to failure is rehearsed, standardised and internationally uniform. A pilot declaring MAYDAY is understood identically by a controller in any country, and a transponder code alerts every radar screen on the network simultaneously without a word being spoken. The 90-second evacuation certification requirement illustrates the same logic: aircraft must demonstrate that a full load of passengers can leave using only half the exits, on the assumption that some will be unusable. A related principle worth understanding is that the investigating body is deliberately kept separate from the regulator. An accident investigation must be free to identify regulatory failure as a cause, which it cannot credibly do if the regulator is investigating itself.
