The Moken are a traditionally nomadic maritime people living along the coasts and islands of the Andaman Sea, chiefly in southern Myanmar and Thailand. Often called sea nomads or sea gypsies, they have historically spent much of the year aboard boats, moving between islands and coming ashore mainly during the monsoon. Their culture is built almost entirely around the sea, and their knowledge of winds, tides, marine life and lunar cycles is transmitted orally through myths, songs and direct observation rather than in writing.

Human eyes are built to focus in air. Underwater, water has almost the same refractive index as the cornea, so the cornea loses most of its focusing power and vision becomes blurred. Moken children compensate by constricting the pupil to a very small aperture, which increases the depth of field and sharpens the image, in the same way that a narrow aperture on a camera brings more of a scene into focus. They also adjust the shape of the lens. Both are learned responses developed through years of diving from early childhood, not inherited traits, which is why researchers have been able to train other children to do much the same.
It is the optical equivalent of squinting, or of stopping down a camera lens: less light gets through, but what does get through is far sharper.
The Moken are the most cited example of indigenous knowledge outperforming formal warning systems. During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when no warning system covered the region, many Moken read the receding sea and the behaviour of the water as signs described in their oral traditions, and moved to high ground in time. Their survival rate was strikingly high. The lesson drawn by disaster risk reduction practitioners is that oral tradition can encode the memory of rare, high-impact events across generations far longer than institutional memory tends to last. The same period, however, exposed the fragility of that culture: post-tsunami resettlement, restrictions on nomadic movement, national park boundaries and the pull of the tourism economy have pushed the Moken towards settled life, which erodes precisely the immersive experience of the sea on which both their knowledge and their underwater vision depend.
