Rohtang Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, located in Himachal Pradesh at an elevation of about 3,978 metres (13,051 feet). It lies on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH-3) and serves as the traditional gateway between the lush Kullu Valley and the cold-desert Lahaul-Spiti region, remaining snow-covered and closed for several months each year.

Built beneath Rohtang Pass by the Border Roads Organisation and named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, this 8.8-km tunnel at over 10,000 feet is the world's longest highway tunnel above that altitude. It provides all-weather connectivity between Manali and Lahaul Valley, cutting the distance by about 46 km and travel time by 4-5 hours, even during heavy snowfall that would otherwise close Rohtang Pass itself.
A shortcut carved straight through the mountain so travellers no longer depend on the weather-vulnerable pass above.
