The Tirumala Hills are a range in the Seshachalam hill system of the Eastern Ghats, in the Tirupati region of southern Andhra Pradesh. They are traditionally described as seven hills — Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri — said to represent the seven hoods of Shesha, the serpent of Hindu cosmology, which is why Tirumala is called Saptagiri or Edukondalu, the seven hills. The Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), sits on the last of these peaks and is among the most visited pilgrimage centres in the world. For exam purposes the hills matter on three counts at once: as a religious site, as a geological one holding the Eparchaean Unconformity and the Natural Arch, and as an ecological one forming the core of the Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve and Sri Venkateswara National Park.

An unconformity is a buried erosion surface — a boundary in a rock sequence where deposition stopped for a long stretch of time, the existing rock was eroded, and later sediments were laid on top. The time represented by the missing rock is simply absent from the record. The Eparchaean Unconformity at Tirumala is one of the world's most striking examples because the two sides are so far apart in age: Archaean basement below, Proterozoic Cuddapah sediments above, with an enormous interval unrecorded in between. It is also unusually accessible, exposed along the ghat road up to Tirumala.
Think of a diary in which pages for several decades were torn out and the later entries written directly on the stump. Nothing tells you what happened in those decades except the ragged join — and that join is an unconformity.
Tirumala is the clearest Indian case of one landscape carrying religious, geological and ecological value that pull against each other. Pilgrim traffic on the scale the temple receives requires roads, water, waste handling and construction inside a biosphere reserve and a national park; the red sanders growing on the same slopes are valuable enough to sustain organised smuggling, and enforcement operations in these forests have themselves become news. The 2025 Tentative List submission is an attempt to give all three strands one protective frame. For a Mains answer on reconciling pilgrimage tourism with ecological protection, or on managing geo-heritage in India — which still has no dedicated geo-heritage law, only notified sites under the Geological Survey of India — Tirumala is the most efficient example available.
