PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department to track financial transactions and serve as identity proof.
PAN 2.0 is an upgraded, fully digital version of the system built around a unified portal and paperless issuance.
Key additions include an enhanced QR code for verification and a PAN Data Vault to secure PAN details.
Upgrading is not mandatory; existing PAN cards remain valid and the upgrade is free when applying for a new PAN or making updates.
The system also provides online PAN verification services for banks and government departments.

A PAN has ten characters: the first five are letters, the next four are digits, and the last is a letter that acts as a check character. The fourth character is the most tested: it denotes the category of the holder, with P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a firm and T for a trust. The fifth character is normally the first letter of the holder's surname.
Simple Analogy: Like a vehicle number plate, the PAN is not a random string; each block of characters carries specific information about who holds it.
