On 2 July 2026 the Ministry of External Affairs announced that India and Japan will celebrate 2027 as the 'India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons', marking 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Diplomatic relations were established on 28 April 1952, and the week of 28 April 2027 will be observed as India-Japan Week.
The two sides will hold ten commemorative programmes with a strong youth focus, among them IMAGE-75 (manga, anime, gaming), RASA-75 (arts), SPORT-75, Cricket Kizuna-75 and Mirai-Vigyan-75 (science, including the LUPEX lunar mission).
An India-Japan Sports Week with an Ekiden relay in Delhi-NCR is planned for February 2027.
