UDISE+ is the Ministry of Education's school information system and among the largest education management information systems anywhere, collecting school-level returns on enrolment, teachers, infrastructure and outcomes and aggregating them from district to national level. Its value is that it makes the education system legible for planning under NEP 2020 - which is also why its uncomfortable numbers matter. Beneath an improving national pupil-teacher ratio, this edition records government schools losing nearly 86 lakh students while private schools gained over 88 lakh, a shift in where Indian children are being educated rather than a fall in how many are. And the retention series describes the system's real bottleneck: 98.5 per cent of children stay through the Foundational stage but only 51.9 per cent through Secondary, so the losses are concentrated at precisely the stage that determines access to higher education and formal employment.

Two of these numbers deserve to be read against each other. A pupil-teacher ratio of 24:1, comfortably inside the NEP's 30:1 benchmark, suggests a system with enough teachers. A Secondary retention rate of 51.9 per cent suggests a system that loses half its students before it can use them. Both are true, because the average conceals distribution: a ratio computed nationally says nothing about the 1,00,843 schools still running on a single teacher, and enrolment access measured by Gross Enrolment Ratio - 89.6 per cent at Middle against 71.7 per cent at Secondary - shows the funnel narrowing exactly where dropout climbs to 7 per cent. The digital gap is the other structural finding: with internet in only 67.4 per cent of schools, roughly a third of the system cannot participate in any online component of NEP-era teaching.
