Rajsamand lies in the Mewar region of southern Rajasthan and takes its name from the Rajsamand Lake, an artificial lake built in the seventeenth century by Maharana Raj Singh I of Mewar. The district is known for its marble quarries, which supply a large share of India's marble, and for Kumbhalgarh Fort nearby, part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its semi-arid climate and dependence on a limited number of water sources make water supply projects a recurring priority in the district.
