Fourth Tri-Services Future Warfare Course Begins at Manekshaw Centre Under HQ IDS

The fourth edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course begins at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi on 3 August 2026 and runs for four weeks.
•
It is conducted under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) and coordinated by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS).
•
Participants are drawn from the three Services along with government organisations, academia, industry and strategic think-tanks, and the syllabus covers artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, cyber and cognitive warfare, autonomous systems, grey-zone operations and multi-domain operations.

Pingali Venkayya, Designer of the Swaraj Flag, Remembered on His 150th Birth Anniversary

The Prime Minister paid tributes to freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya on his 150th birth anniversary, remembering his role in giving the nation the Tricolour.
•
Venkayya was born on 2 August 1876 at Bhatlapenumarru near Machilipatnam in present-day Andhra Pradesh and died on 4 July 1963; his flag work earned him the name 'Jhanda Venkayya'.
•
The Swaraj flag he designed at Gandhi's request in 1921 is the direct ancestor of the national flag the Constituent Assembly adopted on 22 July 1947.

Ujh Multipurpose Project Revived to Harness India's Ravi Waters in Kathua

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, reviewed the status and phased implementation roadmap of the Ujh Multipurpose Project in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
•
The project is being implemented by WAPCOS Limited, a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, and will begin in phases while acquisition of the remaining land proceeds simultaneously.
•
Located on the Ujh, a main tributary of the Ravi, the project is designed to generate about 186 MW to 212 MW of electricity.

Commercial and Captive Blocks Reach 20.2% Share as July Coal Output Rises 7.51%

India's coal production in July 2026 reached 69.75 MT provisional, a 7.51 per cent rise over the 64.88 MT of July 2025, while dispatch grew 17.34 per cent to 86.33 MT.
•
The share of captive and commercial blocks in national coal production has risen from 10.9 per cent in FY 2021-22 to 20.2 per cent in FY 2025-26, and these blocks crossed 200 MT for the first time at about 210.46 MT.
•
Since commercial coal mining was launched on 18 June 2020, 141 coal mines have been auctioned across 14 rounds with a combined peak rated capacity of 366.35 MT a year; 123 went to private players and 44 successful bidders had never mined coal before.

NBA Releases Rs 8.22 Crore Rice Benefit-Sharing to Institutions and States
•
The National Biodiversity Authority released Rs 8.22 crore to three research institutions and 33 State Biodiversity Boards and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils - one of the largest single access and benefit-sharing disbursements for rice.
•
The money came from M/s Pioneer Overseas Corporation, an international seed company, for using Indian rice (Oryza sativa) varieties to develop and commercialise hybrids.
•
Rs 2.47 crore went to research institutions that conserved and shared the varieties, of which ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad received Rs 2.43 crore and Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Uttarakhand received Rs 3.26 lakh.

PM Surya Sarovar Yojana Approved for 5,000 MW Floating Solar with Storage
•
The Government approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) on 31 July 2026 to develop 5,000 MW of Floating Solar Photovoltaic capacity with co-located energy storage, at an outlay of Rs 5,070 crore.
•
Each project must carry storage of at least two hours, adding up to 10,000 MWh, so that solar output can be shifted to peak demand hours; the scheme runs from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31.
•
The scheme rests on a National Institute of Solar Energy assessment putting India's floating solar potential at about 102.18 GWp across reservoirs and inland water bodies, against a current floating solar base of only about 700 MW.
