India plans to spend up to Rs 45,000 crore, about $4.7 billion, on railway projects in border areas adjoining China, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The investment is to be rolled out over the next 18 to 24 months.
It covers new railway lines and platforms as well as upgrades to existing networks.
Projects will span Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam and other northeastern states.
The programme is expected to account for nearly 22 per cent of India's total railway infrastructure spending over the next two years.
Military logistics is governed by weight and volume rather than by distance alone. A single freight train can move what would require hundreds of trucks, at lower fuel cost and without congesting the road network that civilian traffic and troop movement also need. In a contingency the constraint is rarely whether forces can reach the frontier at all, but how quickly and in what quantity supplies can follow them and be sustained. Rail lines running close to the border compress that timeline, which is why strategic rail connectivity is assessed as a defence capability and not merely as transport policy.
Simple Analogy: Roads are like carrying shopping bags by hand — flexible, but limited per trip. Rail is the delivery lorry: less flexible about where it stops, but it moves the whole order at once.
The programme spans India's western, northern and eastern frontier states.
