The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 53.5 in July 2026, its lowest reading since August 2021.
The index remained above 50, so manufacturing conditions continued to improve, but at the slowest pace in nearly five years.
New orders grew at their second-weakest pace in more than four years as firms reported tougher market conditions.
Hiring also slowed, though export orders improved after a slump in June.
A PMI reading above 50 signals expansion and below 50 signals contraction.
The PMI is a diffusion index built from a monthly survey of purchasing managers, who are asked whether conditions such as output, new orders, employment, supplier delivery times and inventories improved, worsened or stayed the same. The responses are combined into a single number where 50 is the dividing line: above 50 means more respondents reported improvement than deterioration, so the sector is expanding; below 50 means it is contracting. The crucial point is that the index measures the direction and breadth of change, not its size. A fall from a high reading to a lower one still above 50 means the sector is growing more slowly, not shrinking.
Simple Analogy: It is a speedometer, not an odometer. A drop from 80 to 60 km/h means you are slowing down, but you are still moving forward.

A statistic that turns before the wider economy does, giving early warning of a change in direction.
