The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India launched a revamped version of its MyCall mobile application on 3 August 2026.
The app allows telecom consumers to rate voice-call quality in real time.
Users can also report technical issues linked to call performance.
TRAI is the statutory regulator of the telecom sector, established under the TRAI Act, 1997.
A regulator can measure network quality in two ways. It can conduct drive tests, sending vehicles with measuring equipment along selected routes, which produces precise data but only for the places and times tested. Or it can collect ratings from users on their own handsets, which is far less precise per reading but covers every location where subscribers actually are, continuously. Crowdsourced data is therefore complementary rather than a substitute: it identifies where problems cluster, and drive testing then verifies them. The value lies in coverage and volume rather than in the accuracy of any individual rating.
Simple Analogy: Drive tests are a doctor's detailed examination of a few patients; crowdsourced ratings are a health survey of the whole population. You need both to know where to look.
