The Sun continuously blows out a stream of charged particles called the solar wind, which carves a vast bubble in the surrounding galactic medium — the heliosphere. The heliopause is the outer skin of that bubble, where the solar wind's pressure finally balances the pressure of the interstellar medium. Crossing it is the operational definition of 'entering interstellar space'. Voyager 1 crossed in August 2012 and Voyager 2 on 5 November 2018.
Simple Analogy: Think of a river emptying into a lake. Near the mouth, the river's current pushes the lake water aside; further out, the current dies and lake water takes over. The heliopause is that boundary line, with the Sun as the river and the galaxy as the lake.
