Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was launched on 22 January 2015 from Panipat, Haryana, as a joint effort of the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Education, and Health and Family Welfare.
Sex Ratio at Birth at the national level rose from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2025-26 (provisional), per the Health Management Information System.
Gross Enrolment Ratio of girls at the secondary level rose from 75.51 per cent in 2014-15 to 83.4 per cent in 2025-26, per UDISE.
In the 15th Finance Commission period, BBBP became a component of the SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti and was expanded to all districts of the country.
BBBP is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with 100 per cent central financial assistance, implemented by States and Union Territories.
Mission Shakti is the umbrella mission for women's safety, security and empowerment, organised into two verticals. SAMBAL covers safety and security, and holds One Stop Centres, the Women Helpline, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Nari Adalat. SAMARTHYA covers empowerment, and holds Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Shakti Sadan, Sakhi Niwas, Palna and SANKALP - the Hub for Empowerment of Women. BBBP's placement under SAMBAL reflects its origin as a response to a safety problem, namely gender-biased sex selection, rather than an economic one. The measurement question matters just as much. Sex Ratio at Birth counts girls born per 1,000 boys, so it captures pre-birth discrimination directly and responds within a year - which is why it is the headline indicator here rather than Child Sex Ratio, the census measure of girls per 1,000 boys aged 0-6, which also absorbs post-birth mortality and updates only every ten years. The SRB figure of 929 comes from the Health Ministry's Health Management Information System, a service-delivery reporting system covering institutional births, so it reflects recorded deliveries rather than a full population count. Enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act is the legal instrument behind the ratio, since the practice BBBP targets depends on prohibited sex determination.
Simple Analogy: Sex Ratio at Birth is a thermometer read every year; Child Sex Ratio is a full medical check-up once a decade - both matter, but only one tells you whether this year's policy is working.
