Most serious railway accidents trace to a single failure mode - a train passing a signal at danger, or exceeding a safe speed, because the driver did not or could not act. An Automatic Train Protection system removes the dependence on that human action: it continuously knows where the train is, what the signal ahead shows and what speed is permitted, and if the loco pilot does not brake when required, it brakes on its own. Kavach is India's indigenous version, and the reason it is not simply software is visible in what deployment requires - Station Kavach at every station and block section, RFID tags along the entire track length to tell the train precisely where it is, telecom towers for continuous radio contact, optical fibre cable along the track, and Loco Kavach on every single locomotive. The system only protects a train when every one of those elements is present, which is why rollout is measured in route kilometres rather than in units installed and why it is inherently slow and capital-hungry. The SIL-4 certification matters too: Safety Integrity Level 4 is the most demanding grade in the international standard for safety-related systems, corresponding to an extremely low tolerated probability of dangerous failure - appropriate for a system that must be trusted to brake a passenger train.
Simple Analogy: It is a co-pilot that cannot be distracted - it watches the signals continuously and takes the brake if the driver does not.
