The National Credit Framework sets the rules for how learning — classroom, vocational, experiential — is converted into credits and how many credits a level of study carries. The Academic Bank of Credits is the depository where those credits sit: a student earns credits at one institution, banks them, and can redeem or transfer them at another, which is what makes multiple entry and exit under the National Education Policy 2020 workable rather than merely declared. APAAR — the unique identifier issued to a learner — is the account number that ties an individual to their credit record across institutions and years. As of 12 August 2026, 3,123 institutions had been onboarded onto the Academic Bank of Credits, more than 700 universities and 7,500 affiliated colleges had adopted the National Credit Framework, and over 35.27 crore APAAR IDs had been issued.
Simple Analogy: The credit framework is the currency, the Academic Bank of Credits is the bank, and APAAR is the account number. Without the account, credits earned at one college cannot be spent at another.
