Larsen & Toubro announced on 13 August 2026 that it had won an order valued between ₹10,000 crore and ₹15,000 crore to build what it describes as India's largest single-cluster AI infrastructure facility.
The contract was awarded by Together AI, a United States-based AI cloud platform co-founded and led by Vipul Ved Prakash.
L&T will execute it through its AI infrastructure subsidiary LTN Compute and its digital infrastructure arm Vyoma.AI.
The AI Factory will deploy 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs and be hosted at Vyoma.AI's Chennai data centre campus.
Phase 1 of the Chennai campus is designed for 250 MW, with power infrastructure readiness stated at 150 MVA, on a site planned for gigawatt scale.
An AI Factory is a purpose-built data centre whose entire design — power, cooling, networking and floor layout — is optimised around dense clusters of Graphics Processing Units rather than around conventional servers. GPUs are used because training and running large AI models is a massively parallel arithmetic problem: thousands of chips must work on slices of the same calculation simultaneously and exchange results at very high speed. The three workloads such a facility serves are training (building a model from data), fine-tuning (adapting an existing model to a narrower task) and inference (actually answering user queries with a finished model). Because each GPU rack draws far more power and generates far more heat than a traditional rack, AI data centres are described in electrical terms — megawatts (MW) of IT load and megavolt-amperes (MVA) of apparent power — rather than in floor area.
Simple Analogy: A conventional data centre is a library: many small requests, each cheaply served. An AI Factory is a steel mill — a small number of enormous, continuous, power-hungry processes, where the binding constraint is not space but electricity and cooling.
