Astronomers have characterised GJ 523b as a mega-Earth, a rocky planet far more massive than Earth but only about 2.5 times as wide.
It has a mass of about 23.5 Earth masses, a radius of about 2.55 Earth radii and a bulk density of about 7.8 grams per cubic centimetre.
The planet orbits a mid-K dwarf star once every 17.75 days, on what appears to be a highly tilted, near-polar orbit.
Transit data came from NASA's TESS mission and mass measurements from the NEID spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5-metre telescope in Arizona.
At 23.5 Earth masses it should have accreted a thick gas envelope and become a gas giant, which it did not, and the reason is unexplained.
A mega-Earth is a proposed class of rocky exoplanet defined by two thresholds together: a radius of at least 2.1 Earth radii and a bulk density of at least 5.5 grams per cubic centimetre. The density condition is what separates a mega-Earth from a mini-Neptune of similar size, because a planet of that width is usually puffed up by a thick hydrogen-helium envelope. For comparison, Earth's own mean density is about 5.5 grams per cubic centimetre, so GJ 523b at about 7.8 is substantially denser than Earth.
Simple Analogy: Two balls of the same size, one a beach ball and one a cannonball. Size alone does not tell you which is which; you have to weigh them.
