Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav told an IUCN side event at UNCCD CoP17 in Ulaanbaatar on 24 August 2026 that India restored 21.76 million hectares of land between 2011 and 2020.
The figure comes from India's Second Progress Report on the Bonn Challenge, against a pledge of 26 million hectares by 2030.
Restoration work over the decade generated roughly 1.22 billion person-days of employment.
India is preparing its 2021-2025 reporting cycle with the ICFRE Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management and IUCN, tracking area, financial flows and employment.
CoP17 is being hosted by Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar from 17 to 28 August 2026 under the theme 'Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.'
Increase forest and tree cover, improve ecosystem services and build climate resilience
Key: One of the missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change
Channel funds collected in lieu of diverted forest land into compensatory afforestation and restoration
Key: Operates through the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority
Extend restoration into cities by developing urban forests
Key: Creates green cover in and around urban areas, where degradation pressure is highest
Provide the technical base for India's next restoration reporting cycle
Key: Working with IUCN on the 2021-2025 assessment across area, finance and employment indicators
The only legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management; adopted 1994
Global conservation body; hosted the side event at which India presented its progress report and maintains the Red List of Threatened Species
Apex forestry research body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; hosts the Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management
CoP17 is being held in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia - a landlocked country in East and Central Asia bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, and home to the Gobi Desert. Mongolia is an apt host: large parts of its territory are rangeland vulnerable to desertification, and the conference has seen a push on rangeland restoration finance alongside the land-degradation agenda. On the sidelines of CoP17 the Indian minister also held bilateral meetings with South Asian counterparts on agroforestry, biodiversity and land restoration.

A voluntary global pledge platform under which countries commit to bring degraded and deforested land under restoration; India's pledge is 26 million hectares by 2030.
The UNCCD's central target concept - that the amount and quality of land resources needed to support ecosystem functions should remain stable or increase.
One person's work for one day; used to express labour generated by a programme, so 1.22 billion person-days measures cumulative employment, not the number of people employed.
Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from climatic variations and human activities.
Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, which manages funds levied in lieu of diverted forest land.
