Adi Vaani, launched by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs on 1 September 2025, is India's first AI-powered translator for tribal languages. It went live covering four languages - Gondi, Bhili, Mundari and Santali - with Kui of Odisha and Garo of the North East added subsequently, translating speech and text between these languages and Hindi and English. It was built by a consortium led by IIT Delhi with BITS Pilani, IIIT Naya Raipur and state tribal research institutes in Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Meghalaya, adapting open translation models designed for low-resource languages. The technical problem it addresses is scarcity: machine translation depends on large volumes of parallel text, and languages that are mainly spoken rather than written leave very little of it, so the platform doubles as a documentation exercise. The five languages added at the Mysuru conclave, together with the iOS release, extend both the coverage and the reach of that effort.

Language loss in tribal India is not primarily a cultural grievance - it is an access problem. A child taught only in the state's dominant language in her first school years falls behind before literacy is established, and an adult who cannot follow a scheme's paperwork in a language she reads does not claim it. That is why the conclave's outputs pair documentation with delivery: primers for classrooms, a translation platform and a chatbot for services, and museums for the historical record. The museums do a second job, of correcting a gap in how the freedom struggle is taught, since tribal risings against colonial rule are thinly represented in mainstream accounts. Holding the conclave at Mysuru is deliberate rather than incidental - CIIL, the national institution for Indian languages, has been based there since 1969, and the language technology behind Adi Vaani needs exactly that kind of institutional base.
