The Department of Posts released upgraded versions of the Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa mobile applications and inaugurated 14 renovated post office buildings on 24 August 2026.
Dak MITRA — Mobile Interface for Transactions and Rural Assistance — is a unified operational platform for more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices, running on Android handheld devices so Branch Postmasters can carry out paperless, real-time postal and financial transactions.
Dak Sewa gives citizens 24x7 access to tracking, booking, complaints, post office and PIN code locators and financial calculators, in 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI.
Both were built indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology on the Advanced Postal Technology platform, as part of the DoP IT 2.0 modernisation programme.
Post office buildings are being redesigned under a Design Manual prepared with the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi: 40 post offices across 17 states were taken up as a proof of concept, 27 are complete, and the programme is to be extended to 60 more this financial year.
Operates the world's most widely distributed postal network. Formed on 1 October 1854, when Lord Dalhousie's reforms introduced uniform postage rates through the India Post Office Act, 1854. It functions under the Ministry of Communications and delivers mail, small savings, insurance and, through IPPB, banking.
A payments bank established under the Department of Posts with 100 per cent equity owned by the Government of India, launched on 1 September 2018. Its mandate is to reach the unbanked and underbanked using the postal network and its postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks.
The Department of Posts' in-house technology centre, which built both Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa indigenously on the Advanced Postal Technology platform under DoP IT 2.0.
The specialised UN agency coordinating international postal policy, established at Bern on 9 October 1874 as the General Postal Union and renamed in 1878. One of the oldest intergovernmental organisations, with 192 member countries.

Equip the rural postal workforce with a single digital operating platform
Key: Mobile Interface for Transactions and Rural Assistance; unified platform for over 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices, enabling paperless real-time postal and financial transactions on handheld devices
Give citizens one app for postal services
Key: 24x7 tracking, booking, complaints, post office and PIN code locators and financial calculators, in 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI
Give every location in India a precise, permanent digital address
Key: An open-source, interoperable, geo-coded grid-based addressing system developed by the Department of Posts with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It divides the country into units of roughly 4 metres by 4 metres and assigns each a 10-character alphanumeric code derived from its latitude and longitude, so the code does not change when administrative names change
Provide life insurance through the postal network
Key: Premium collection at the doorstep is one of the functions now handled on Dak MITRA
Small savings mobilisation through post offices
Key: Include the Public Provident Fund, Sukanya Samriddhi Account and Kisan Vikas Patra, delivered through the same counters now being redesigned
Provide Indian-language AI translation as a shared public platform
Key: The national language translation mission whose services give Dak Sewa its 23-language support
Replaced the colonial-era Indian Post Office Act, 1898 and came into effect in 2024. It reframes India Post as a citizen-centric service network rather than a monopoly carrier, and is the legal setting for the service-delivery reforms described here.
The reform under Lord Dalhousie that created the Department of Posts on 1 October 1854 and introduced uniform postage rates across British India — the origin point of the modern network.
India Post's rural reach rests on Branch Post Offices — small single-person or two-person offices in villages, staffed not by departmental employees but by Gramin Dak Sevaks, extra-departmental workers who open the office, carry letters and pay out savings withdrawals. There are more than 1.4 lakh such offices, and they are the point at which the postal network becomes a financial network: a villager's savings account, insurance premium and Aadhaar-authenticated cash withdrawal all pass through the same counter. That is why Dak MITRA is significant beyond its features. Digitising the Branch Post Office converts the last mile of a mail network into the last mile of a banking network, which is the same logic that produced India Post Payments Bank in 2018 — reach that no commercial bank could replicate, put to a second use.
Simple Analogy: The branch office is the tap at the end of a very long pipe. Upgrading the pipe changes nothing unless the tap works; Dak MITRA is the tap.
IPPB, Aadhaar-based e-KYC and doorstep banking through Gramin Dak Sevaks put the postal network at the centre of the last-mile financial inclusion effort, alongside Business Correspondents and AePS.
BHASHINI for languages, Aadhaar for authentication and DIGIPIN for addressing are shared national platforms that India Post consumes rather than builds — the same pattern as UPI's use of the Aadhaar and banking layers.
The Post Office Act, 2023 replacing the 1898 Act belongs with the wider replacement of colonial-era laws, and is a ready example for questions on legislative reform.
Smart parcel services, after-hours booking and DIGIPIN-based addressing position India Post in the parcel and e-commerce delivery market rather than only in letter mail.
