Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched India's first non-genetically-modified, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed on 24 August 2026 at Musunuru in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh.
The hybrid was bred through a collaboration between the ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research and the processing firm Gourmet Popcornica that began in February 2021.
The stated purpose is to end India's dependence on imported popcorn-maize hybrid technology, since no domestic high-expansion line previously existed.

Maize is India's third most important cereal after rice and wheat. India holds about 4 per cent of the world's maize area but around 2 per cent of production, a gap reflecting lower average yields, which is precisely what improved hybrids are meant to close.
Hybrid vigour comes from crossing two inbred parent lines; genetic modification introduces genetic material from outside the sexually compatible gene pool. A hybrid can therefore be non-GMO, and the two terms are not opposites, a point questions frequently exploit.
The launch continues a pattern of the state anchoring branded, processing-led agricultural value chains rather than bulk commodity output.
