Earth casts a two-part shadow into space. The umbra is the dark inner cone from which the Sun is completely blocked; the penumbra is the lighter outer cone from which only part of the Sun is hidden. A lunar eclipse is classified by how far the Moon penetrates this shadow: total (the whole Moon inside the umbra), partial (only part of the Moon inside the umbra), or penumbral (the Moon passes only through the outer penumbra and merely dims, often imperceptibly). Eclipses can happen only when Sun, Earth and Moon are nearly in line, so a lunar eclipse always falls on a full moon and a solar eclipse always on a new moon. They do not happen every month because the Moon's orbit is tilted about 5 degrees to the plane of Earth's orbit, and the alignment is close enough only when a full or new moon coincides with a lunar node. That is why eclipses arrive in seasons, with a solar eclipse roughly a fortnight before or after a lunar one. The shadowed part of the Moon glows red rather than going black because Earth's atmosphere scatters short blue wavelengths away and refracts longer red and orange wavelengths into the umbra - the same physics that reddens a sunrise, projected onto the Moon.
Simple Analogy: Stand under a floodlight and your shadow has a hard black core and a soft grey fringe. The Moon crossing the black core gives a partial or total eclipse; grazing only the grey fringe gives a penumbral one you can barely notice.
