A landslide-dammed 'barrier lake' on the Nepal-Tibet border began overflowing on 28 August 2026, forcing rescue teams on both sides to pull back from the flood zone.
The lake had formed two days earlier, when debris from an ice-and-rock collapse blocked a river channel near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo, on the Lhende river system.
China's Ministry of Water Resources put the impounded volume at 1.5-2 million cubic metres on 27 August; by 28 August it had swelled past 2.5 million cubic metres and the water level had risen about 0.6 metre.
The Nepali Army suspended helicopter search-and-rescue in Rasuwa district for 90 minutes, and Chinese rescue personnel withdrew about one kilometre to safe ground in Gyirong County, Shigatse.
Officials later assessed the overflow as far smaller than the original 26 August flood, but the episode showed how a secondary hazard can freeze an entire relief operation.
A barrier lake forms when a landslide, rockfall or avalanche dumps enough debris into a narrow valley to block the river, impounding water behind an unengineered natural dam. Such dams are made of loose rock, ice and mud, have no spillway, and can fail suddenly once water overtops them or seeps through. The resulting surge, heavy with sediment, is called a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) when the impounded water is of glacial origin. The danger lies not only in the volume of water but in the debris it mobilises and in the fact that it arrives with almost no warning — which is why downstream valleys, hydropower tunnels and relief camps are cleared the moment overtopping begins. These events are characteristic of the Himalaya, the Andes and the Alps, where steep slopes, thinning ice and moraine or landslide dams occur together.
Simple Analogy: It is a dam nobody designed: a heap of rubble holding back a reservoir, with no gates to release the pressure and no engineer certifying how much it can take.
The barrier lake sits astride the Nepal-China frontier. On the Nepali side is Rasuwa, a Himalayan district north of Kathmandu that borders the Tibet Autonomous Region and carries the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi drainage; on the Chinese side is Gyirong County in Shigatse prefecture, a border trade point with Nepal. The impoundment formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and the Purepu Tsangpo on the Lhende river system, upstream of settlements and hydropower works in the Nepali valleys below.
