Ruto tied the decision to a wider policy against exporting unprocessed minerals, covering soda ash, oil, gold, lithium, coltan and rare earths.
Soda ash extraction at Lake Magadi began in 1911; Tata Chemicals took over the operation in 2005 through its acquisition of Brunner Mond.
Soda ash is sodium carbonate, used to make glass, detergents and chemicals. Rift valley lakes with no outlet concentrate sodium salts as water evaporates, leaving a trona crust that can be dredged and processed.
