Research published on 11 September 2026 in Nature Metabolism reports that patterns of circulating proteins measurable in children as young as eight can signal a raised risk of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic disease decades later.
Researchers at Vanderbilt Health, UTHealth Houston and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill analysed around 5,000 proteins in 273 children and adolescents in a Texas border-health cohort.
They identified six protein signatures that significantly influence the risk of developing cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic disease in adulthood.
The paediatric signatures proved highly concordant with the adult disease proteome, pointing to pancreatic beta-cell health, insulin sensitivity, liver function, inflammation and cholesterol metabolism.
Many of the proteins involved were modifiable, including with GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy, which is the basis of the 'precision prevention' claim - intervening decades before symptoms appear.
The proteome is every protein a cell, organ or organism is making at a given moment. Unlike the genome it is not fixed - it differs between cells, shifts with age, diet and disease, and so records what the body is actually doing.
