Andhra Pradesh has all but stopped releasing Krishna water to Chennai from the Kandaleru reservoir in Nellore district after storage there fell to 17 TMC.
The discharge, which peaked at 455 cusecs in July, was cut to 100 cusecs from 10 September and then to 40 cusecs, with a full halt expected within days.
Chennai received about 3 TMC of Krishna water between May and September, against the usual 4-5 TMC for the period.
Water reaches Chennai under the Telugu Ganga Project, drawn from the Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna and carried through the Kandaleru-Poondi canal.
Chennai's own reservoirs hold about 5 TMC, which officials estimate will meet the city's needs for around five months.
Carry Krishna river water from the Srisailam reservoir in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai for drinking water, while irrigating land in Rayalaseema and Nellore on the way.
Key: A network of canals and tunnels ending in the Kandaleru-Poondi canal; approved in 1977 and formalised by the 1983 inter-state accord, it delivered water to Poondi for the first time in 2004.
Signed by the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, with Karnataka and Maharashtra as the other Krishna riparian states. Each of the three upper states agreed to spare 5 TMC a year, a total of 15 TMC, for Chennai's drinking water; 12 TMC was reckoned to reach Tamil Nadu after seepage and evaporation losses. Because the water is for drinking, the allocation sits outside the irrigation shares settled by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal.
Water starts at the Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, travels south through Rayalaseema, is stored at Kandaleru in Nellore district - on the Kandaleru river, a Pennar tributary, linked to Somasila on the Penna - and then runs down the Kandaleru-Poondi canal across the state border into the Poondi reservoir near Chennai. From Poondi it is shared with Red Hills, Sholavaram and Chembarambakkam.
