India called for inclusive and member-driven reforms at the World Trade Organization's (WTO) 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14).
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of upholding WTO's foundational principles during the reform process.
A key demand from India was to ensure that Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) provisions for developing countries are made precise, effective, and fully operational.
Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) refers to provisions within WTO agreements that grant developing countries special rights and more favorable treatment. These provisions acknowledge the unique development needs and economic vulnerabilities of developing nations, allowing them flexibilities such as longer implementation periods for commitments, technical assistance, and preferential market access. The goal is to help them integrate more effectively into the global trading system and achieve economic growth.
Simple Analogy: Imagine a race where some runners have a head start or lighter gear because they are still developing their strength. S&DT is like giving developing economies a similar advantage in the global trade race to help them catch up and compete fairly.
The WTO is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably, and freely as possible. It provides a forum for trade negotiations, administers trade agreements, and acts as a dispute resolution body.
