The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is a cable-stayed bridge across Mumbai's Mahim Bay, connecting the suburb of Bandra in the north with Worli in south-central Mumbai. Officially named the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, it was opened to traffic in 2009 and was built by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. It was the first major cable-stayed bridge constructed over open sea in India, and it bypasses the congested Mahim Causeway route that previously carried all traffic between the western suburbs and south Mumbai, cutting a journey that could take an hour down to a few minutes.

Both bridge types hang the deck from towers, but the geometry differs and so does the engineering. In a suspension bridge, huge main cables sweep in a curve between the towers and are anchored at each end, with vertical hangers dropping from those cables to the deck. In a cable-stayed bridge, cables run directly and diagonally from each tower to the deck, forming a fan or harp pattern, with no main sweeping cable and no massive anchorages. This makes cable-stayed bridges more economical for medium spans and easier to build over water where anchoring at the shore is impractical — which is precisely why the design was chosen for a bridge across open sea in Mumbai.
A suspension bridge is a washing line with clothes pegged down from it; a cable-stayed bridge is an umbrella, with ribs running straight from the central pole.
Mumbai's geography is the reason the bridge exists. The city sits on a narrow peninsula, so almost all north-south traffic historically funnelled through a few congested corridors, of which the Mahim Causeway was the critical bottleneck between the western suburbs and south Mumbai. The Sea Link takes that traffic out over the water entirely. Its wider importance is as a demonstration project: it established that large cable-stayed marine structures could be built in India, and it opened the way for later and larger works such as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. It also illustrates the economics of urban tolled infrastructure — a state corporation builds the asset and recovers cost through tolls, a model now standard for major urban expressways.
